How does an offset account work?

  1. An offset account gets set up at the point your home loan settles. The offset account is a separate sub-account to your loan account.
  2. The offset account acts like a transactional account. You can keep a money balance in this account and make payments.
  3. Interest on your home loan gets calculated daily and is offset by the balance in your offset account. For example, if your loan is $250,000 and you have $5,000 in your offset account, then interest is calculated on $245,000.
  4. You can set up your loan repayments to be made out of your offset account.
  5. As time progresses, the offset account helps you minimise the amount of interest you pay and pay off your loan faster!
